Sonoma Orthopedic’s Physician Page

Founded in 2005, Sonoma Orthopedic Products is a venture-backed orthopedic device company outside Chicago, Illinois. We provide fracture fixation devices that allow orthopedic surgeons to quickly and easily repair bones with difficult geometries. Unlike plating systems that lie on the bone surface, Sonoma Orthopedic Products’ implants enable support of fractures from within.

Intramedullary fixation of Sonoma’s implants is achieved without the use of traditional external screws; our implants incorporate ActivLoc® Technology to deploy talons that engage the intramedullary cortex, while minimizing incisions and eliminating the need for additional hardware. If necessary, post-operative removal of the implants can be performed with a least-invasive surgical approach.

ActivLoc®

By combining intramedullary stable fixation, and avoidance of impact to surrounding structures and soft tissue, which can result in faster healing time, improved patient recovery and greater patient satisfaction levels.  Sonoma’s cutting edge proprietary innovations have been implemented in implants for Ankle Fractures (FibuLock™), Clavicle fractures (CRx®), and Wrist Fractures (WRx®).

FibuLock™ Ankle Pin

The FibuLock™ Ankle Pin utilizes Sonoma’s proprietary ActivLoc® talons proximally along with 5 screw options distally to provide intramedullary fixation to maintain length and rotation after an ankle fracture.  Utilizing the load sharing forces of the IM nail and a less invasive technique, the FibuLock Ankle Pin provides, faster healing time and less wound issues than compared to a plate.

The FibuLock™ nail offers a compression option, two 3.5mm syndesmosis holes, two 2.7mm lateral-medial cortical screw holes and one 2.7mm anterior-posterior locking cortical screw hole. Should it need to be removed, after removing the screws, the talons can simply be deactivated allowing for the nail to be pulled out through a small incision just distal to the fibula.

FibuLock™ was launched in March 2015 for commercialization in the US. It has been implanted in over 800 ankles since with only one reported infection.  Typical indications for the FibuLock™ include but are not limited to: Diabetic/High Risk Patients,  Poor Skin / Fracture Blisters,  Pilon Fractures,  Workers Comp, Athletes,  Military Personnel, Lateral Approach Total Ankles,

CRx® Clavicle Pin

Along with a much less invasive surgery, the difference between the CRx® nail and other IM clavicle repair devices is the ability of the CRx® to reproducibly follow the natural curvature of the clavicle. This is made possible by Sonoma’s flexible-to-rigid Wavibody®. It allows the nail to navigate the bowed medial side of the clavicle and span the entire length of the bone providing greater strength at the fracture site.  Activation of the Wavibody also activates the ActivLoc® talons and a screw is then placed posterior-lateral to hold an anatomic reduction.

The only requirements are that the implant extends a minimum of 50mm beyond the most medial edge and 20mm beyond the most lateral edge of the fracture to ensure bone support.

WRx® Wrist Pin

The WRx® is indicated for extra-articular distal radius fractures or simple intra-articular fractures with minimally displaced intra-articular components.  Similar to the CRx® Clavicle pin the implant is flexible, allowing it to be inserted into the bone while avoiding critical nerves, tendons and blood vessels.  After positioning the implant inside the bone, it can transition from flexible-to-rigid and the talons are activated to stabilize the fracture to provide protection and alignment while it heals.
